On
July 6th of 1994, I had the great fortune to dock my yacht, the “AlaskanRogue”,
off the Eastport peninsula of the fair city of Annapolis, Maryland. The
unofficial, but universal, yacht club of the local sailing scene, Marmadukes’
Pub soon became my home onshore during my subsequent months there. As
with other haunts in my life, I soon began frequenting it daily. At home in
the deep wood hues of this sailors bar, with the laughter of its guests and
the rousing times, I felt the desire to create an anthology of twelve poems
about different roses to accompany my poem, “The Twelve Roses”. Looking about
me for the possible subjects of these poems, I was inspired by the essence of
Marmadukes’ great success, the amiable female staff of Marmadukes. So
I began then, and I finish now, twelve poems for twelve of the “Roses of Marmadukes”
which I grew to know and enjoy. Each woman now has a rose which will last
them a lifetime and I have twelve poems which will last forever. Because
of the vastness of their beings and the continuing love of my wife, whom I
married at Marmadukes on the Valentine’s Day after I began this anthology, I
was so inspired that I wrote two additional poems about roses. As a result,
those poems and “The Twelve Roses” will always be included with theirs to
create more than a bouquet of love.. Marc
